Leisure and housing consumption after retirement: new evidence on the life-cycle hypothesis

چکیده
Abstract Foreseeable income reductions around retirement should not affect aggregate consumption. However, given higher leisure endowments after retirement, theory also predicts lower consumption of substitutes. To avoid misinterpreting this predicted drop as a puzzle, our novel approach focuses on housing (complementary to in utility) and controls for changes. In Germany tenants represent roughly half all households, making many expenditures directly observable micro data. We find significant negative impacts the status consumption, which is hard reconcile with life-cycle theory. Despite lock-in nature past decisions, at have additional – though small effects housing.

Housing Consumption after Retirement
According to the life-cycle theory of consumption and saving, foreseeable retirement events should not reduce consumption. This argument applies especially to housing consumption, whereas other consumption expenditures may fall when home production substitutes them (given higher leisure after retirement). Using micro panel data for German tenants we find that income drops at entering retirement...
متن کاملLeisure activities in retirement housing.
Two common assertions about leisure activities in retirement housing were studied: ( I ) that residence in special retirement housing for the elderly will result in more leisure activities than will residence in conventional dispersed housing, and (2) that greater participation in leisure activities is associated with a more favorable outlook on life. Two waves of interviews were conducted with...

Evidence from several countries reveals a substantial drop in household consumption around retirement age that some researchers believe is difficult to reconcile with standard life-cycle models. Using detailed expenditure data from a Spanish panel survey, we find no evidence of a consumption-retirement puzzle in Spain for the period of 1985–2004. However, we find a drop in food expenditure at h...
متن کاملOptimal Housing, Consumption, and Investment Decisions over the Life Cycle
We provide explicit solutions to life-cycle utility maximization problems simultaneously involving dynamic decisions on investments in stocks and bonds, consumption of perishable goods, and the rental and the ownership of residential real estate. House prices, stock prices, interest rates, and the labor income of the decision-maker follow correlated stochastic processes. The preferences of the ...
متن کاملEstimating Life-Cycle Parameters from the Retirement-Consumption Puzzle
Using pseudo-panel data, we estimate the structural parameters of a life—cycle consumption model with discrete labor supply choice. A focus of our analysis is the abrupt drop in consumption upon retirement for a typical household. The literature sometimes refers to the drop, which in the U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey we estimate to be approximately 14%, as the “retirement—consumption puzzle....
